The ‘big three’ in the Championship swapped positions again in midweek, as Leeds returned to the summit with a win at Middlesbrough while Burnley drew and Sheffield Utd lost.

It will be nip and tuck in all three EFL divisions the rest of the way with promotion and relegation battles in full flow. What will this week bring in our EFL acca.

Saturday, 12th April

Cardiff City FC Logo Cardiff vs Stoke City FC Logo Stoke

This is a huge game in the fight for survival as 22nd placed Cardiff City welcome 20th Stoke City to South Wales on Saturday. These games really are true ‘six pointers’ and a win for either could be just the boost they need to climb away from danger. Cardiff find themselves in the relegation zone but know a win here would see them climb above Stoke in the table. They will be also be boosted by the point they secured on Tuesday at Preston thanks to a 94th minute equaliser.

Stoke suffered the opposite of the joy Cardiff experienced on Tuesday, succumbing to a late equaliser at home to Luton. It has been another shocking season for the Potters, who had promotion aspirations but have once again cycled through managers and now find themselves in a fight to avoid dropping to the third tier. They have the players in their squad to be far higher in the table, but no manager yet has been able to get them clicking.

I expect a nervy afternoon in South Wales and think both teams will cancel each other out.

Bristol Rovers vs Exeter

A West Country derby which has far more importance for Bristol Rovers is the second game in our accumulator this week. Rovers are in a dog fight, three points above the drop zone having played a game more than Burton Albion who are directly behind them. Since manager Inigo Calderon has taken over, although some would game the football has improved the results have not, which is why they are in a scrap. Calderon has said this weekend’s game is like a final, and it is hard to disagree with him.

No such worries for Exeter, they are well clear of danger in mid table and can go to Bristol on Saturday and play with freedom. They will be looking to really rub salt in the wounds of the hosts, though, and that will surely be the message from manager Gary Caldwell as he starts thinking about plans for next season already.

This game feels huge for Bristol Rovers, and I think they will edge it.

Doncaster vs AFC Wimbledon

The battle for promotion in league 2 is arguably the most exciting race in the country. Nobody seemingly wants to really take a grip of this league and both Doncaster and Wimbledon are firmly in the mix. Donny improved their chances with a 2-0 win at Cheltenham last weekend and they sit fourth, two points behind stuttering Walsall and the automatic places. A win here would do them the world of good.

Wimbledon sit just one place behind Doncaster and are also still right in the hunt for the top three places. They narrowly beat Harrogate last week which was their first win in 4 games, and they will be hoping that that win can now kickstart a run. If either of these sides show any kind of consistency between now and the end of the season they can certainly claim promotion.

Tough one to call, but I am going to side with Doncaster to nick this game.
