It is the last international break of the season, which means while the Premier League and Championship takes a break, we can focus on some league 1&2 action.
There are some intriguing games this week, let’s take a look at a few in our latest EFL acca.
Saturday, 22nd March
Wrexham vs
Stockport County
This is the biggest league 1 game of the day on Saturday, as third placed Wrexham host fifth placed Stockport. Wrexham got a massive win last week, going to promotion rivals Wycombe and securing a 1-0 win thanks to January signing Sam Smith. It put the Welsh club into second place for a few days until Wycombe won on Tuesday night to climb back above them. You get the feeling this race could go until the final day, and no doubt Wrexham have the firepower and momentum to make it two promotions on the spin.
The same could be said for their opponents on Saturday. They also got a massive win last weekend, in what is a derby match at Bolton. Cheered on by a raucous away following, Stockport grabbed the three points thanks to a superb strike by Isaac Olaofe. This will be a battle between two newly promoted teams who are looking to make it back to back promotions, and you wouldn’t bet against either.
I can see an entertaining draw in this one.
Draw @ 15/8
Peterborough United vs
Charlton Athletic
It has not been the season Peterborough fans or ownership expected this year. The Posh are usually up there challenging at the right end of the table but have struggled this year, and only recently have moved away from danger. They did pick up a big derby win last week, winning 1-0 thanks to a Tayo Edun goal, who was then later sent off in injury time. The club will likely see this as a year for experience for a lot of their young players, and will be looking to return to the right end of the league next season.
No such worries for Charlton, who have been on a fantastic run of form, winning 5 of their last 6 to leave them fourth in the league. Automatic promotion may be a step too far but they look well set to be in the playoffs. Manager Nathan Jones is a constant ball of energy and they will be looking to harness that in the right way come playoff time.
This is a tough one to call, but I can see Charlton just edging it to continue with their good run of form.
Charlton to win @ 13/10
Bradford City vs
Colchester United
It had been all steam ahead for Bradford, surging up the league table off the back of 10 straight home wins until their momentum was halted by a shock 1-0 home defeat to strugglers Tranmere last weekend. It is just one loss, and it shouldn’t derail any promotion bid, but it is important Bradford bounce back quickly in the promotion race. Although they sit 2nd, they are only 5 points above fifth and every win is precious at this stage of the season.
Colchester have enjoyed a similarly excellent second half of the season. For the last few years the club has been in a battle to avoid the drop out of the football league altogether. But appointing the Cowley’s last year was a masterstroke and they have steered the club in the right direction to no occupy a playoff place. They battered Fleetwood 3-0 last week so come into this one full of confidence.
Another really tough one to call, so I am sitting on the fence and going for a draw.
Draw @ 11/5
EFL Acca
I have gone for three games this week that all carry significant meaning in each division. Nerves will play a part as things start to get really tense as Spring arrives.
