Liverpool are ever closer to the Premier League title after a late Virgil Van Dijk winner against West Ham last week after Arsenal dropped points at home to Brentford the day before. Elsewhere, the race for Champions League football took more twists after Forest lost and Chelsea drew while Newcastle and Man City both picked up victories.
Here are some predictions for PL week 33 with our latest acca.
Everton vs
Man City
Details: Saturday, April 19th, 3.00 pm, Goodison Park
Everton were excellent at Forest last week, more than deserving of their 1-0 victory thanks to a late Abdoulaye Doucouré strike. It was a performance that we have often seen since David Moyes returned, solid at the back and looking dangerous on the break. It is easy to forget this side were just above the relegation zone when Moyes took the job, and the turnaround has been such that relegation has not been a fear for a long, long time. It has left fans excited at what Everton could go on to achieve next season as they move into their new home.
It was looking awful for Man City during the first half of their home game against Palace last week, 2-0 down and looking lost. But that man again, Kevin De Bruyne, stepped up to the plate, scoring a free kick to get them back in the game and then they never looked back, winning 5-2 in the end. In the week where KDB announced he would be leaving City at the end of the season, you wouldn’t bet against him leading them back to the Champions League next season.
I think City will start to get momentum now, and pick up a win here, although it won’t be easy.
Man City win @ 22/5
Aston Villa vs
Newcastle
Details: Saturday, April 19th, 5.30 pm, Villa Park
Despite a valiant effort, Villa bowed out of the Champions League on Tuesday, winning the game 3-2 against PSG but losing 5-4 on aggregate. It showed that Villa belong at that level now, pushing a PSG side, who many think our favourites to win the competition, all the way. They came so close to levelling it up but just ran out of steam. The race to ensure they are back playing among Europe’s elite next season now begins on Saturday.
Newcastle look like the side with all of the momentum in the top 5 race. Missing manager Eddie Howe, who is in hospital recovering from Pneumonia, they easily brushed aside Man Utd last week 4-1. To be honest, the scoreline wasn’t much of a shock when you consider the season both clubs have had, but it was still a very impressive performance from Newcastle nonetheless. They seem to be peaking at just the right time.
This is a tough one to call, Villa have been excellent at home all season but Tuesday might have taken a lot out of them. I was tempted with the draw but Newcastle come into in good form so I am tipping them to win.
Newcastle win @ 41/20
Fulham vs
Chelsea
Details: Sunday, April 20th, 2.00 pm, Craven Cottage
An Easter Sunday West London derby is where we go next as Fulham host local rivals Chelsea. The Cottagers were disappointing in defeat at Bournemouth on Monday night, not showing their usual intensity that has been evident throughout the season. European football is still a very real possibility for Fulham, though, and they have shown they usually bounce back quickly after a setback. No better game to do that than this one.
The dark clouds have gathered once again over Stamford Bridge. In a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Ipswich last week, there were audible boos from home fans when keeper Robert Sanchez tried to play out from the back. It speaks of the unease of the style of football manager Enzo Maresca wants to play compared to what the fans want to see. Ultimately, fans also want to see winning football and Chelsea simply haven’t won enough games since Christmas. It feels like a club still trying to find it’s way since the change in ownership and they look like missing out on Champions League football once again.
Fulham have had a record of won one, lost one for a long time and I think that will continue here as I can see them beating Chelsea.
Fulham win @ 15/8
PL Acca
Three games all with more than just points riding on them. The most intriguing race now in the Premier League is the Champions League spots and City, Villa, Newcastle and Chelsea all need points as the try and make sure they finish in the top 5.
