We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and new year. In the NFL world, we couldn’t ask for a better game to kick off 2025, as the Minnesota Vikings travel to the Detroit Lions with the division title and conference No.1 seed on the line. Who will come out on top in this heavyweight NFC North clash?

Oddsmakers currently favor the Detroit Lions and I think I agree with their prediction. Although injuries have hit Detroit hard, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, they still have an explosive offense which I think will outlast the Vikings defense. I also expect a high scoring affair, with both quarterbacks, Sam Darnold and Jared Goff, in excellent form.

Vikings vs Lions Analysis

I am going to start with the away team in this one, the Minnesota Vikings. They are currently on a nine-game winning streak, but did suffer defeat when these two teams clashed in week 7, going down 31-29.

The Lions are 8-0 against the spread in the last 8 meetings between the two, and they are currently on a four-game winning streak against the Vikings. They have been one of the best teams in the NFL so far this season, but there is no hiding the fact that injuries have put doubts in a lot of people’s minds about whether they can go all the way. Despite stars like Aidan Hutchinson going down for the season, they have continued to get the job done, and staged a 40-34 comeback win over the 49ers on Monday night.

Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores has received a lot of praise for how he has got his unit playing this season, and his defense blitzes at the highest rate in the entire NFL. It will need to somehow overcome the dominant Detroit O-line to get to Goff and make him scramble.

One of the reasons I am leaning towards the Lions is the Vikings secondary give up big plays, and I don’t think they will be able to contain a Lions offense that has been particularly strong at home.

As mentioned above, I think the Lions will win this game and I think Jahmyr Gibbs is set for a big evening. Since his teammate and fellow running back David Montgomery got injured, he has been carrying the load on the ground for Detroit, and been doing a fine job of it. He is explosive out of the backfield and I think he will hit paydirt.

For the Vikings, Justin Jefferson will, as always, be the biggest threat. He is usually very reliable for a touchdown and I think the Vikings will be leaning on him to exploit a Lions defense that has struggled in recent weeks. I am also tipping the over 50.5 points in a game between two teams that have been scoring for fun recently.

I can’t wait for this one.
