There have been some big signings, lots of talking points and some shock results over the last week in the EFL. Lots of teams didn’t play last week due to a combination of the F.A cup and the freezing weather.
With a full slate for this weekend, here is the latest EFL Acca.
Saturday, January 18th
Derby County vs
Watford
Derby don’t come into this game in the greatest of form, losing their last three in the Championship. Those results have seen them sit four points above the drop and in a precarious position. Goals have been a problem for Paul Warne’s men, and they will be hoping top scorer Jerry Yates can improve on his 6 goals so far this campaign to pull them away from danger.
Watford are also not in the best of form, without a win since Boxing Day which has seen their run to get into the playoff spots curtailed. The Hornets currently sit in 8th place, so the playoffs is very much still on if they can put a run together.
I am going against the league table here and predicting Derby to win.
Derby to win @ 6/5
Mansfield vs
Wycombe
It has been an excellent return to the third tier so far for Nigel Clough’s side. They currently sit 9th in the table, and will be looking to consolidate themselves at this level and who knows, maybe even push for an unlikely playoff spot. They have won their last two in the league, beating promotion favourites Bolton and fellow newcomers to league 1 this season Stockport last week.
It has been a tumultuous week for Wycombe. They have lost their manager, Matt Bloomfield who departed the club to join Luton after doing an excellent job. The hope and aim for Wycombe now will be that their promotion push does not go off the rails, but it wouldn’t be the first time that has happened to a club. They will need to get a replacement in as quickly as possible.
I think Mansfield are catching Wycombe at a good time and feel they may just edge this.
Mansfield to win @ 13/8
Port Vale vs
Newport
Vale didn’t have a game last week due to the weather, but Darren Moore has not been resting on his laurels, already making two signings so far in this window and stating their business may not end there this month. They have had a blip but secured a huge win at Doncaster recently that has set them up for another assault on the top two.
Newport have very different targets. They are looking to stabilise under manager Nelson Jardim and to that effect so far, it’s job done. Owner Huw Jenkins has been talking about changing the style of football at the club to become more attractive to potential loan players, so that will be Jardim’s job for the rest of this season.
Vale should have too much I think.
Port Vale to win @ 21/50
EFL Acca
A three-fold this week and I have gone for a couple of underdogs in Mansfield and Derby. I know Wycombe have had a superb season so far, but I think, without a manager, Mansfield are catching them at just the right time. Derby need a win and Watford are patchy so I think they could get three points there, while Vale should be too strong for Newport.
