Accumulator Bets Explained

An accumulator bet (or Acca) is a multi-bet with two or more selections. You can make these selections from events in a single sport or combine events from different sports. However, many bookies find ways to encourage bettors to create accumulators from a single sport through Acca Boosts, and one of the most popular options is the footy accumulator.

With accumulator bets, you only get a payout if you win all your selections. As a result, while accumulators offer a chance for larger payouts, they are also very risky.

For accumulators to be as profitable as they are, there is a form of compounding during the entire process. This is identifiable in the way your wager increases with each selection. With your first selection, your initial stake determines the payout. However, the stake on the second selection equals the total payout from the first selection. As the process progresses with more selections, your total payouts quickly increase.

Types of Accumulator Bets

The types of accumulators available depend on the number of legs or selections in the bet. With accumulators typically starting from four selections, here are popular acca bets you can find:

  • Fourfold acca: These have four selections in the bet
  • Fivefold acca: An accumulator with five selections
  • Sixfold acca: An acca bet with six selections. Check out our sixfold acca calculator.

In addition to the traditional accumulators listed, other multiple bets are called accumulators among bettors. A huge benefit of these accumulators is that they provide a lower risk for bettors since many still payout if you lose a few selections. Examples of these accumulators include:

  • Double: This bet consists of two selections that must win for you to get a payout
  • Treble: Here, you have three selections that must win for the bet to payout
  • Trixie: The Trixie bet consists of three selections combined into four bets (3 doubles and one treble)
  • Patent: This consists of three selections that form seven bets (3 single bets, 3 doubles, one treble). Use our patent bet calculator to work out your returns.
  • Yankee: A Yankee requires four selections and creates 11 bets (6 doubles, 4 trebles, one 4-fold acca), of which two winning selections are enough to secure a payout
  • Lucky 15: This bet has four selections and 15 total bets (4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, one 4-fold acca). Check out our Luck 15 bet calculator.
  • Canadian: Also known as the Super Yankee, the Canadian consists of five selections that form 26 separate bets (10 doubles, 10 trebles, five 4-folds, and one 5-fold acca)
  • Lucky 31: A lucky 31 also has five selections, but this time, you have 31 bets (5 singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, five 4-folds, one 5-fold acca)
  • Heinz: The Heinz bet has six selections from which 57 bets are formed (15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 4-fold, six 5-fold, one 6-fold acca)
  • Lucky 63: This is another bet with six selections, but here, you have 63 individual bets (6 singles, 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 4-fold, six 5-fold, one 6-fold acca)
  • Super Heinz: A Super Heinz consists of seven selections that combine to form 120 bets (21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 4-folds, 21 5-folds, seven 6-folds, one 7-fold acca)
  • Goliath: This is one of the largest multiple bets most bookies offer. A Goliath bet consists of eight selections that form 247 bets (28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 4-fold, 56 5-fold, 28 6-fold, eight 7-fold, one 8-fold acca). You can use our free Goliath Bet Calculator to work out your returns.

Correlated Selections

One thing to note with acca bets is that most bookies won’t allow you to make correlated selections. A correlated selection refers to any selection whose outcome significantly influences the result of another selection. These selections are usually made from the same game.

Calculating Your Accumulator Bet Payouts

To better understand how the payouts from Acca bets work, consider the 4-fold acca below:

  1. Germany to beat Spain (13/8 or 2.63 odds)
  2. Portugal to beat France (11/5 or 3.2 odds)
  3. England to beat Switzerland (23/20 or 2.15 odds)
  4. Netherlands to draw against Turkey (3/1 or 4.0 odds)

To calculate the total payout from this 4-fold acca, you need to calculate the payout for each selection using the formula:

  • Payout = (Stake * odds) + Stake

Here is what you can expect from the first selection:

  • Assuming a £1 stake: (£1 * 13/8) + £1 = £2.63 total payout

Now, since it’s an acca bet, the stake for the second selection is equal to the total payout from the first (i.e., £2.63):

  • For the second selection, the stake is now £2.63: (£2.63 * 11/5) + £2.63 = £8.42

Repeating the process for the third and fourth selections:

  • Third selection (£8.42 stake): (£8.42 * 23/20) + £8.42 = £18.10
  • Fourth selection (£18.10 stake): (£18.10 * 3/1) + £18.10 = £72.40

Although this breakdown gives a better picture of how the payouts of accumulators increase with each selection, it can be quite tedious. Alternatively, you can use another formula which is easier with decimal odds:

  • Total Acca payout = (Stake * odd 1 * odd 2 * odd 3 * odd 4) = (1 * 2.63 * 3.2 * 2.15 * 4.0) = £72.40

Regardless of your chosen formula, the process can be time-consuming and is only ideal when trying to understand how your acca bets work. I recommend using our Accumulator calculator for a faster and more accurate calculation of acca bets. Plus, most bookies automatically calculate your potential returns before you place your acca bet.

How to Place Accumulator Bets at Betting Sites

Placing an accumulator bet is a straightforward process. For any bookmaker you visit, your first step is making selections. You can make 4, 5, 6, or more selections that will then appear on your betslip.

Your betslip should show each selection as an individual bet, but there should be an Accumulator option or other Multiple Bets you can select (depending on the site). For instance, if you make four selections on BetVictor, you can input a stake on a 4-fold acca, Trebles, Doubles, Yankee, or Lucky 15.

The bookie should provide information on your potential payout once you enter the stake for your accumulator bet. If you’re okay with this payout, you can submit the betslip and wait for the results of your selections.

Although accumulator bets are typically all-or-nothing bets, many bookmakers now offer accumulator insurance that may reward you with a free bet or a part of your stake if you lose one of your selections. On other sites, you may find the early cash out option with accumulators.

Benefits of Acca Bets

The most significant advantage of accumulators is the potential returns on your bet. With the proper selections, getting 1,000x your bet or more is possible with these bets.

Despite the positive aspects of accumulators, these bets also have some notable issues, one of which is the ease with which bettors can end up chasing losses. Since the potential payouts from accumulators are usually much larger than the initial stake, bettors who lack responsible gambling habits often attempt to use accumulators as a quick way to cover losses.

Other problems with accumulator bets include the low probability of winning the bet and the time it takes to research and identify high-quality selections to add to your betslip.

Are Accumulators Good Bets?

Accumulator bets are a great way to land a sizeable payout at your favourite bookmaker, but how many bettors do you know that consistently win acca bets?

In addition to the challenge of winning an accumulator, you should remember that you’re restricted to the odds a specific bookmaker offers when making your selections. So, in most cases, you may not get the best odds on many of the selections in your acca.

Furthermore, sports betting is almost always unpredictable, and upsets are always possible. If this is the case, placing an accumulator is not worth this risk, considering you can spread your stake and still get returns on two or three single bets instead of losing it all in a 4-fold acca.
