The chalk refers to the favorite, and if you want to be pedantic, it is only reserved for heavy favorites. Keep reading to find out where this odd bit of betting jargon comes from and how to use it like a pro!

Where Does the Betting Term Chalk Come From?

Chalk Inventor

Long ago, before you could open a betting app and instantly place a bet, you’d actually have to go to a physical sportsbook. Before everything went digital, the sportsbooks would have a big chalkboard and manually update the odds.

Favorites soon became known as chalks because as people bet on them the sportsbook would constantly have to change their odds, resulting in the favorite’s name being covered with chalk dust.

How to Use the Sports Betting Term Chalk?

You can call the favorite the chalk. For example, if the Los Angeles Lakers are paying -600 to beat the Atlanta Hawks, you can refer to the Lakers as the chalk. When someone says the action on the weekend was chalky, this means most of the favorites won.

If someone calls you a chalk eater, those are fighting words! This slur is reserved for unsophisticated bettors who always back the favorite no matter what odds the sportsbook is offering.

Should You Bet on the Chalk?

The answer is it depends. Always betting on the chalk is a sure way to burn through your bankroll. However, backing the favorite is profitable even if they’re paying low odds as long as you’ve run the numbers and concluded that the sportsbook is underestimating the chalk’s chances of winning.

Let’s say the New York Giants are paying -300 to beat the Philadelphia Eagles, which means the sportsbook expects NY to win 75% of the time. If you think the Eagles have no chance of winning and lose 90% of the time, then it’s a great bet to take the Giants at -300.
