It is Easter weekend, and that means two games in quick succession for all EFL teams. We will know a lot more about the fate of clubs at the bottom and top of each league come 5pm on Monday.
While few things may be decided, two good or bad results in the next few days will go a long way to sealing the fate of some clubs, good or bad. Let’s take a look at some Good Friday fixtures on our latest EFL acca.
Friday, 18th April
Derby vs
Luton
We start with a traditional ‘six pointer’ at the bottom of the Championship as 21st Derby County take on 23rd Luton Town. Derby sit just one place and one point outside of the relegation zone, but have seen a real upturn in fortunes since John Eustace took over as manager. They were on a run of 4 straight wins until a defeat at Swansea, and they have since reacted to that loss with two straight draws. They are certainly harder to beat now and safety is in their hands.
In what has been a disaster of a season for Luton so far following relegation from the Premier League, there is still time to save themselves. However, they need to start winning and this Friday against a direct rival would be the ideal time to start a run. They have not won in 3, and lost at home to Blackburn last weekend, time is running out.
It will be tense, these types of games always are, but I think Derby will edge it.
Derby to win @ 8/5
Bolton vs
Wycombe
A big game at the top of league 1 as Bolton host Wycombe. Wanderers are in danger of their season fizzling out. After an upturn in results when Steven Schumacher took the reigns, things have gone south recently, with two straight defeats. Last week, in particular, was bad day as they suffered a 4-1 defeat at Barnsley. If Bolton are to make the playoffs they are going to have to go on a run, beginning this weekend.
That will be no easy task for Bolton, though, as their visitors, Wycombe, have aims of their own. They are only 1 point off Wrexham and automatic promotion. Wycombe have bounced back from defeat at Reading well, with two 1-0 wins in succession against Huddersfield and Stevenage to close the gap on Wrexham in second. Another 1-0 win this weekend would go down a treat with the Wycombe faithful.
It will be close, Wycombe don’t tend to be in high scoring games. I am going for a draw which suits neither side.
Draw @ 23/10
Carlisle vs
Port Vale
A clash of two teams at different ends of the table in league 2 at Brunton Park on Saturday, as Carlisle clash with Port Vale. The home side have suddenly found new hope and life in their relegation battle. After looking dead and buried a few weeks ago, two wins has seen Mark Hughes’ men climb off the bottom of the table and within site of safety. It will still be a tall order, they will need to win more than the recent two victories, but they are not finished yet.
Vale can see the finishing line of promotion and league 1 now. After seemingly no teams wanted to earn promotion, with indifferent form of all of the top 7 over the last month, Vale have emerged from the pack to top the table and now look primed to win the league. Promotion is very much in their hands, they have one of the hottest strikers in the league in Lorent Tolaj and a manager who has been there and done it.
All the stats and logic will say a Vale win here, but this is the EFL. I can see Carlisle getting a point.
Draw @ 9/4
