The international break is here and it is time to take a look at some Nations League action. This is break will see matchday three and four complete as countries will be looking to make a move to promotion to League A or to get into the final stages of the competition.
There are some interesting fixtures over the next week or so, as some sides will be looking to maintain their 100% start to the competition while others will be looking to gain their first point. The Nations League can seem quite complicated, so have a read of our guide to understand all the permutations and what it involves.
With that, let’s take a look at some games.
England vs
Greece
Details: Thursday, October 10th, 19:45 BST, Wembley Stadium, London
England interim manager Lee Carsley will be looking to strengthen his case to land the job permanently with these next round of fixtures, beginning with Greece. He did himself no harm with England’s first two Nations league games, two 2-0 victories over Ireland and Finland which sees them sit joint top of League B Group 2. Carsley introduced a more attacking brand of football than his predecessor which will make fans happy, and his line-ups also suggested he wants England to attack more. He will be hoping for more of the same.
Greece currently sit on six points with England and will have no fear of the trip to London. They, too, won 2-0 in Ireland and defeated Finland 3-0 at home. They will be looking for promotion but it will be very difficult to win at Wembley. I think even with some injuries England will have too much, although it may well be closer than some might think.
England to win outright @ 2/7
Spain vs
Denmark
Details: Saturday, October 12th, 19:45 BST, Estadio Enrique Roca de Murcia, Murcia
This is a clash between the top two of League A, Group 4 and surprisingly it isn’t Spain that are currently top. The European champions kicked off their Nations League campaign with a 0-0 draw in Serbia, but then followed that up with a 4-1 win in Switzerland, despite going down to 10 men early in that game. They are the European team to beat, boating a healthy mix of flair and steel.
Denmark come into this in really good form, beating both Serbia and Switzerland 2-0 in their opening two games. They have some exciting talent coming through to go along with the experienced players such as Eriksen and Højbjerg and are always a tough nut to crack. But if anyone can carve Denmark open, it is Spain, and I think they will.
Spain to win outright @ 2/5
Italy vs
Belgium
Details: Thursday, October 10th, 19:45 BST, Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Italy have enjoyed a fantastic start to their Nations League campaign, kicking things off with a 3-1 win in Paris that shocked many. In a group containing France, themselves and Belgium, many thought France would win the group with Belgium and Italy battling it out for second place, but nobody told Italy that as they secured a famous win in France. They can put a further marker down here by beating the other heavyweights in the group.
Belgium have been struggling for form for a while, going back to their Euro 2024 tournament. Captain Kevin De Bruyne has been critical of the team recently, and you can see why. They were comfortably beaten by France last time out after beating Israel in their first game, and will need a big performance in Rome to get back on track. This will be close, a draw wouldn’t surprise me but I am going for Italy to edge it at home.
Italy to win outright @ 9/10
Poland vs
Portugal
Details: Saturday, 12th October, 19:45 BST, PGE Narodowy, Warsaw
Portugal are 100% so far, with two 2-1 wins over Croatia and Scotland sending them to the top of League A Group 1. It took until the 88th minute to get the winner against Scotland, with a certain Cristiano Ronaldo popping up to get the winner, has he has done so often throughout his remarkable career. Many thought Portugal would go the distance in the Euros, such is the talent they have, and they are one of the favourites to win the Nations League.
It has been a mixed start for Poland. An exciting 3-2 win in Glasgow in the opening game and then a disappointing 1-0 defeat away to Croatia leaves them in 3 points. Although they are at home to Portugal, it will be tough to keep all of their attacking options quiet. They will look to soak up pressure but I can’t see them keeping Ronaldo and Co out for 90 minutes and I am going for an away win.
