Apple Pay Explained

Apple Pay is still a relatively new payment method, even though it has been around for over a decade now, there are still many people unfamiliar with it. As the name indicates, the app can only be downloaded from Apple’s App Store, so only people who have access to Apple devices can use Apple Pay.

However, despite it being only limited to Apple users, Apple Pay is a brilliant payment option due to its speed and ease of use. Once you have linked up your card, you can pay by phone and Apple Pay anywhere, from grocery stores to coffee shops.

Apple Pay is also extremely secure thanks to the Touch ID on the devices. Hackers can steal your personal details remotely, but it requires levels of sophistication that you would see in a movie to steal your fingerprint. Additionally, Apple Pay has been praised by lots of established businesses and banks across the globe for its security.

Pros and Cons of Betting with Apple Pay

ProsCons
Ultimate safetyNot always available for withdrawals
Apple Pay deposits are eligible for bonusesOnly available to Apple bettors
No transaction fees
Instant deposits & fast withdrawals
High deposit/withdrawal limits of up to $10,000
No need for extra apps or accounts

Apple Pay has many strengths, but its main selling points for use in online sports betting include:

  • Ease of use – It’s already preinstalled on newer iOS devices, and you don’t need to remember any new account passwords.
  • Security – You won’t have to share any banking information with the betting sites, as it acts as an intermediary.
  • Flexibility – The payment method doesn’t impose inconvenient payment limits, it’s pretty fast, and most importantly (if you ask me), it doesn’t charge any fees!
  • Instantly available – There is no need to wait for your money to be processed when using Apple Pay. As soon as you submit the payment, the money should be transferred from your bank account and be made available instantly for you to use on bets. Some other payment options will not be as quick.

Unfortunately, its withdrawal use is not as widespread in US sportsbooks, and you’re bound to use Apple devices to be able to enjoy Apple Pay transactions. Despite it’s limitations, Apple pay has proven to be one of the more popular sports betting banking options.

Things to Consider with Apple Pay Betting Sites

Finding the right Apple Pay online sportsbook isn’t the easiest task, especially when the choices are industry leaders like DraftKings and BetMGM. But I’m here to help you reach the right decision. These are the things to consider:

  • Apple Pay Availability: You’d think this is an obvious step; well, duh, you want to use Apple Pay. However, spotting the Apple Pay logo or the option being available for deposits doesn’t mean that it’s there for withdrawals as well. This is why I suggest you first check whether the payment method is available both ways before you make a deposit.
  • Suitable Alternative for Cashouts: If you’re open to depositing with Apple Pay but withdrawing with another method, that’s cool. But you should know that some sportsbooks limit you to only one alternative. And if that’s an instant bank transfer or a credit card withdrawal, then you should be good. However, if the alternative is a bank wire, which can take up to 12 days, I suggest you look elsewhere or go for another payment method, like a PayPal betting site.
  • Payment Limits: Most of the top sportsbooks have rather flexible payment limits, but you know what suits you best. That’s why it’s essential to know the minimum/maximum payment limits before you sign up. Some betting sites, like DraftKings, let you deposit as low as $5, while others can set the bar at $10 or even $20.
  • Betting Markets: Once you’re clear with the banking side of things, it’s time to consider the sports on offer. Signing up with a site that doesn’t offer the line that caught your eye is no good. I recommend you check the odds, odd margins, and betting markets before you create the account. If possible, of course. Also, if you’re looking for live betting sportsbooks, make sure the variety is there.
  • Bonus Offers: Betting with bonuses and bonus bets is one of my favorite things about online sportsbooks, and I’m happy to report that Apple Pay deposits are eligible for bonuses. However, some sportsbooks limit the bonus bets to a specific sport/event. You should also check for cashback, loyalty points, deposit matches, and odds boosters. Let’s not forget the T&Cs either—as dull as it may be, they really make or break the experience. Look for low rollover (I’m thinking 10x max) and decent min. odds (not higher than 100).

Setting up an Apple Pay Account

Apple Pay Set up

To set up your Apple Pay Wallet, you will need your iPhone, Apple Watch, or other supported device, a card that’s supported by Apple Pay (which is any card issued by Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or AMEX), and an Apple ID. The good news is creating your wallet is as straightforward as signing up for your sportsbook account.

Now, let’s set up your Apple Pay account on your iPhone:

  1. Scroll down while your phone is unlocked, and use the search bar to type Wallet. Alternatively, go to Settings and scroll down to “Wallet & Apple Pay”.
  2. You’ll find the Add button next to “Add a credit or debit card to Wallet” if you’re in the app. Or you’ll see a “Add a card” option in the Settings.
  3. Tap Continue.
  4. The app will guide you through the steps to add your card.
  5. Verify the information with your bank. The institution may ask you to download a verification app before they approve your Apple Pay use. (This usually isn’t the case).
  6. Your card is now added to your Apple Wallet.

Keep in mind you can only add up to 8 credit or debit cards to your Apple Pay account.

How to Fund Apple Pay

Note: US online sportsbooks don’t allow the use of the Apple Cash Card. This means that you won’t need to fund the card–you’ll simply be using one of the cards you’ve already added. Keep in mind AMEX cards aren’t accepted.

If you still want to proceed with funding your Apple Cash Card, you can add money from a debit or a prepaid card. To do so, you should:

  1. Open your Wallet app.
  2. Tap the Apple Cash card.
  3. Click the More button.
  4. Tap Add Money.
  5. Enter the amount you want to add to the card.
  6. Tap Add.
  7. Use Touch ID or Face ID to finalize the transaction.

Betting with Apple Pay Online

Once your Apple Pay is ready and you have added a card that US betting sites support, you are ready to start betting with Apple Pay. Follow these detailed steps and get started in less than 5 minutes:

  1. Pick a Sportsbook: Before you create a sports betting account, you need to decide which sportsbook to join. Pick one of our top 5 Apple Pay betting recommendations, download the sportsbook app (if you’re reading this from your iPhone), or use Safari to sign up from your Mac.
  2. Create an Account: The next step is to register with the sportsbook. Tap to join, select your state, enter the promo code (if needed), and provide all of the requested details. You will have to enter your full name, DOB, home address, and phone number. Some sportsbooks also ask for part of your SSN for the verification process. Plenty of sportsbooks accept Apple Pay, and we have listed the best above.
  3. Tap Deposit: To deposit on your laptop/desktop, you must use Safari. If you’re on your phone, use Safari or the Sportsbook app. Now, tap Deposit.
  4. Select Apple Pay: Once you tap Apple Pay, you’ll be asked to enter the amount. If you wish to pick a card, if you have more than 1 card connected to your Apple Pay wallet, use the “>” button. Once done, make sure to stay within the allowed limits.
  5. Confirm the Transaction: Tap “Buy with Apple Pay” to confirm the transaction. Then, use your Touch ID or Face ID to authorize it.
  6. Successful Deposit: If your card had sufficient funds, you will receive a deposit successful notification, and the amount will instantly be available to your balance.

Popular Bet Types after Using Apple Pay

Once you have found betting sites using Apple Pay, created your Apple wallet and have signed up for a betting account, it is now time to bet on your favorite sports. Some of the most prominent bet types you will see on mobile betting apps include:

Moneyline

In simple terms, a moneyline bet is just picking the winner outright. There is no more to it than that. Favorites will be shown with negative odds while underdogs will have positive odds. For example, you select the Ravens as the -200 favorite to beat the Cardinals.

Point Spread

A point spread looks at the margin of victory in a game. Betting sites will list the margin for the favorite and the underdog. For example, the Patriots are +2.5 point underdogs. If you choose the Pats to cover the spread, they must lose by two or less or win the game for you to win the wager.

Parlays

Parlays combine multiple selections into one overall bet. This means the odds are high and so are the potential returns, but this also makes it more difficult to win. Unless you have parlay insurance, if just one selection loses, then the whole parlay loses.

Props

There are team props and player props. This is where bettors are placing a bet on a specific outcome within a game. For example, you could bet on Patrick Mahomes to throw over a certain amount of yards.

Cashing Out Your Winnings from Apple Pay Betting Sites

To be able to withdraw your winnings via Apple Pay, you must make an account with a sportsbook that allows this, so your options are rather limited. In this case, your only options are DraftKings and BetMGM. If you’ve signed up with any of these two betting sites, you can get your winnings by:

  1. Log into your account.
  2. Make sure you have sufficient funds for withdrawing.
  3. Make sure you’ve cleared the wagering requirements.
  4. Navigate to the Cashier.
  5. Tap Withdrawal.
  6. Enter the amount you want to cash out.
  7. Select Apple Pay as a withdrawal method.
  8. Tap Continue.

If you’ve used more than one card via Apple Pay, you’ll be given the choice to pick a card. Then, you only have to authorize the payment. Your winnings should arrive at your Apple Pay within 24 hours. The best part is that Apple Pay and the operators don’t charge any fees.

Keep in mind you must have made an Apple Pay deposit to be able to withdraw via Apple Pay.

Apple Pay vs Other Sportsbook Banking Methods

Apple Pay has many advantages, but it definitely doesn’t suit everyone, and that’s okay—there are other options available. Some alternatives include:

  • Google Pay: If you’re an Android user and you want to pay with your phone, Google Pay is your obvious choice. However, no site allows Google Pay withdrawals, so you’ll still end up looking for another option.
  • Debit/Credit Cards: Debit or credit cards are the most prominent choice—they’re safe, usually come with no fees, and are rather fast. In fact, some sportsbooks encourage players to use this as the most efficient method.
  • Prepaid Cards: Prepaid vouchers are a great way to deposit—it’s an instant transaction and a safe one for sure. However, withdrawals are out of the question, and the sums you can deposit are predetermined.
  • PayPal: PayPal is the most popular e-wallet in US sportsbooks and is open for both deposits and withdrawals. The only thing you may not like is that the deposit limit is usually higher, starting at $30.
  • Venmo: Venmo is a modern solution for fast withdrawals at US betting sites. The minimum withdrawal limits range between $15 and $25, but the payout speed is usually less than 24 hours. Whilst not as popular as PayPal, there are now more Venmo betting sites than ever as sportsbooks look to make it easier for players to deposit.
