Cooper Flagg is the latest youngster to receive the “generational talent” label. Everything leading up to this point has been pointing in the right direction, but the next few weeks will be crucial for his development and building his confidence heading into the start of the new season.

Fans of the NBA have a pretty bad record for predicting the next Michael Jordan or Lebron James, but Cooper has some incredible statistics that make him look like a great bet. We break down everything you need to know about Flagg and his career thus far.

College and High School Performance

Cooper Flagg playing for Montverde Academy

Cooper Flagg’s journey to the NBA has been rapid, with his high school career at Montverde Academy setting the stage for his success. Averaging over 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists per game, Flagg was a dominant force, showcasing a rare combination of athleticism, length, and defensive prowess. His leadership helped lead Montverde to multiple national championships, solidifying his reputation as one of the top players in his class.

Flagg bypassed college to enter the 2025 NBA Draft, though he briefly played for the University of Maine, where his two-way skills continued to shine.

Despite early setbacks, Flagg’s combination of defense, ball-handling, and scoring makes him a highly anticipated prospect. His high school and college performances made him one of the top players to watch heading into the 2025 NBA Draft.

Bronny James vs Cooper Flagg

Bronny James vs Cooper Flagg

A recent exhibition match put Bronny James, the son of Lebron, against the #1 pick Cooper Flagg. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned for Flagg as he had the worst game of his Career to date. With 10 points on 16 missed shots, he won’t be happy coming away from that game; however, he did look comfortable coming up the court and controlling the game with the ball in his hands.

He looked to be opportunistic and tried to make the most of open shots when he had them, which bodes well for his next match, where he performed exceptionally well. The Mavericks have now benched Flagg for the rest of the pre-season matches and only plan on unleashing his talents once the season starts. The Spurs did the same thing with Wembanyama at the start of the 2023 Season, which worked well for his confidence and preparation.

Is Cooper Flagg Overhyped?

Is Cooper Flagg Overhyped?

When a player is hit with a lot of betting hype and is expected to perform well out of the blocks, we rarely see them live up to the hype. When we look at Flagg’s performance in his first NBA match, it isn’t a good look. If he can pick himself up, which he’s proved he can do, and perform well at the start of the season, we could see the start of something great.

Whether he is “overhyped”, we will have to wait and see, but NBA fans aren’t known for their ability to predict the next generational talent.

Predicting the Next “Generational Talent”

Predicting the Next "Generational Talent"

Over the last 20 years, fans and NBA analysts picked up 12 players who were labelled “generational”:

  1. LeBron James (2003)
  2. Dwight Howard (2004)
  3. Greg Oden (2007)
  4. Blake Griffin (2009)
  5. Anthony Davis (2012)
  6. Andrew Wiggins (2014)
  7. Ben Simmons (2016)
  8. Deandre Ayton (2018)
  9. Zion Williamson (2019)
  10. Cade Cunningham (2021)
  11. Victor Wembanyama (2023)
  12. Cooper Flagg (2025)

Only 2 of these players have managed to live up to the name, or are currently on the right path, these being LeBron and Wemby. If Cooper Flagg wants to follow in the steps of these players, he will need to defy some incredible odds and prove to the league, the fans, and the critics that he has what it takes.

Flagg is surrounded by some great players to start his career – Klay Thompson and Kyrie at Guard, with Anthony Davis at Center. These players can help to facilitate his development and could push him into the category of “generational talent”.
